Application

Applications

  • Mercury determination in petrochemical liquids: Crude oil, shale oil, condensate, naphtha, gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene
  • Mercury determination in gases, LPG, LNG

A device for every application

Refineries or petrochemical plants use the PE-1000 for measurements in liquid raw materials to protect their systems against corrosion (liquid metal embrittlement).

Gas processing plants must also test their gas supply and products for mercury. Aluminum heat exchangers used in liquefaction are highly exposed to corrosion by mercury (LME effect). Most petroleum testing laboratories must also test both liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon matrices.

In this case, the PE-1000 can be optionally equipped for the analysis of gases, LPG and LNG. EX tested sampling systems for direct sampling of high pressure systems (pipeline, pressure cylinders) are available. The samples are collected on amalgamation tubes and transferred to the PE-1000 by means of a heating unit (RH-PE).

Sensitivity

The cold vapor AFS of the PE-1000 is highly sensitive and stable. It is able to achieve a detection limit of only 0.003 ng Hg and a standard deviation of less than 3% at 0.1 ng Hg.

The combination of automatic sample feeding into the vertical combustion system using an autosampler, intermediate focusing on gold traps and detection by atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (AFS) enables reliable detection down to 0.003 ng Hg in routine applications.

The samples are protected from contamination and loss of mercury in septum-sealed 2 ml standard vials.

Flexible configuration of the autosampler depending on the sample volume

The PE-1000 has been developed with flexibility in mind for a wide range of customers and laboratory requirements. It can be operated as a stand-alone system, with an operator manually injecting the sample directly via a gas-tight syringe, or alternatively equipped with an autosampler. The autosampler, with a 15-position “vortex” function for mixing the sample, works automatically and allows standards and samples to be injected without operator intervention. The sample throughput can thus be significantly increased in a fast-working laboratory with a medium sample volume. An autosampler with up to 121 positions is available as an option.

Measuring method

Procedure

  • (Automatic) sample feeding from closed containers
  • Sample combustion
  • Amalgamation and focusing
  • Detection using atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (AFS)

Automated sample measurement

The entire sample measurement is fully automated without operator intervention, thus preventing user errors. Liquid petroleum samples are usually volatile, which can lead to the loss of analytes. For the measurement with the PE-1000, all samples are therefore placed in tightly closed 2 ml septum tubes. Since the homogeneity of the sample is also of crucial importance for trace analysis, the PE-1000 is equipped with a vortex shaker in the autosampler to enable good mixing of the sample before an aliquot is taken for injection. This results in homogeneity of the sample and representative sampling for each aliquot taken for analysis.

Patented innovative combustion technology with enrichment

The PE-1000 is equipped with highly efficient combustion with the most accurate temperature control to ensure complete conversion of petroleum samples. With its patented innovative combustion technology (Patent No.: JP 4226049 & USP 8223332), the PE-1000 is capable of analyzing samples ranging from crude oil or condensate to refined liquid products such as naphtha, jet fuel, etc.. Thanks to the highly efficient conversion, any soot formation is avoided.

Control system

The PE-1000 is controlled by a control software that enables intuitive use. It is characterized by:

  • Fast commissioning
  • Simple setup of the measurement sequences including calibration
  • automatic blank level
  • simply visualized results
  • Standby functions
  • Comprehensive reporting
  • Numerous diagnostic and service tools

Parameters

Mercury (Hg)

Standard norms

The PE-1000 is accredited and recognized according to UOP-938-20. Method conformance ensures that the analysis is performed in accordance with the validated procedure, which provides traceability of all results for each audit.
