Coulometric application

Coulometric Karl Fischer reagents

Coulometric Karl Fischer reagents are used for moisture determination. E.g. in:

  • organic solvents
  • inorganic chemicals
  • oil products
  • Gases
  • Ketones
  • Silicone oils
  • lower carboxylic acids
  • Aldehydes
  • Aromatics
  • Alcohols
  • Ester
  • Ethers
  • Benzene
  • Toluene

There are: the anolyte (generating solution), which is added to the anode chamber of the electrolytic cell, and the catholyte (counter-electrolyte), which is added to the cathode chamber. There are also special anolytes for use with ketones, lower carboxylic acids and silicone oils. Aquamicron reagents can be used in coulometric moisture measurement systems from various manufacturers and are known worldwide for their excellent performance.

The various reagents:

  • AXI / AX / AX01 for general use: organic solvents, inorganic chemicals, oils, petroleum products, various types of gases, etc.
  • AS for oils: Naphtha, gasoline, diesel oil, electrical insulating oil, etc.
  • AKX for ketones: ketones, silicone oils, low carboxylic acids, etc.
  • CXU for Katholyt: AX as well as AS and AKX can be combined
  • FLS for fritless cell: organic solvents, inorganic gases, etc.

Common reagent combinations are:
Aquamicron AXI/CXU or AX/CXU
Aquamicron AS/CXU
Aquamicron AKX/CXU
Aquamicron FLS

The coulometric Karl Fischer titration can be carried out with the CA-310 or CA-31 devices.

Volumetric application

Volumetric Karl Fischer reagents

Volumetric Karl Fischer reagents are used for moisture determination in alcohols, amines, edible oils, sugar, ketones, toluene, xylene, chloroform, generator oils, insulating oils, etc.

A Karl Fischer titrant and methanol or a solvent (for dissolving or dispersing the sample) are required for volumetric titration.

You can choose between two reagent series:
Series SS-Z (pyridine and chloroform-free type)
Series-SS (pyridine type).
The titrants are available in 1mg, 3mg and 5mg or 10mg per series.

SS-Z series:

  • GEX solvents for general use: organic solvents, inorganic chemicals, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, detergents, food, etc.
  • OLX solvent for oils: Naphtha, gasoline, diesel oil, insulating oil, etc.
  • Solvent OLII for oils and greases: naphtha, gasoline, diesel oil, heavy oil, electrical insulating oil, oils and greases (hardened oil, margarine, etc.), etc.
  • Solvent KTX for ketones: ketones, silicone oils, acetic acid and other lower carboxylic acids, aldehydes (except acetaldehydes), etc.
  • Solvent SU for sugar: sugar, proteins, gelatine, additives, animal feed, etc.

SS series:

  • Solvents ML/MS for general use: organic solvents, inorganic chemicals, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, detergents, food, etc.
  • Solvent CM for oils: Naphtha, gasoline, diesel oil, heavy oil, electrical insulating oil, oils and fats (hardened oil, margarine, etc.), etc.
  • Solvent CP for ketones: ketones, silicone oils, acetic acid and other lower carboxylic acids, aldehydes (except acetaldehydes), anilines, etc.
  • Solvent PP for aldehydes: acetaldehydes, propionaldehydes, butyraldehydes, etc.
  • Solvent PE for ketones: ketones, silicone oils, acetic acid and other lower carboxylic acids, aldehydes (except acetaldehydes), anilines, etc.
  • Solvent FM for sugar: sugar, proteins, gelatine, additives, animal feed, etc.
  • Solvent ME for use with vaporizers: gaseous samples, nitrogen, etc.

The volumetric Karl Fischer titration can be carried out with the CA-310 or KF-31 devices.

Standards Application

Standards and reference materials for Karl Fischer titration

Standards and reference materials for Karl Fischer titration are used to verify measurement systems and applications. They are manufactured by Mitsubishi Chemical Co. with ISO9001 accreditation in accordance with ISO, GMP, GLP and FDA guidelines and are traceable to NIST SRM2890.

They are packaged in glass ampoules (for single use) and consist of a solvent with a specific composition and precisely confirmed water content. They are supplied with a certificate of analysis and have a long shelf life.

  • Aquamicron Water Standard 0.1 for checking the coulometric measuring cell with a titer of 0.1 mgH2O/g.
  • Aquamicron Water Standard 0.2 for checking the coulometric measuring cell with a titer of 0.2 mgH2O/g.
  • Aquamicron Water Standard 1 for checking the coulometric measuring cell with a titer of 1 mgH2O/g.
  • Aquamicron Check Solution P for end point adjustment. The solution can be used with both AX and AKX. It can also be used for the daily QC of coulometric moisture measurement systems. The solution has a water content of 3.8-4.2 mgH2O/g.
  • Aquamicron Water Standard 10 for determining the titre of titrants in volumetric determination. The titer of the solution is 10 mgH2O/g.
  • Aquamicron Standard Water/Methanol. For determining the titer of Karl Fischer reagents (3-10 mgH2O/ml). The water content is 2 mgH2O/g.
  • Aquamicron Solid Water Standard for QC on moisture meters with evaporator. The water content is 3.83%.
