Application

Applications

Determination of the mercury content in

  • Drinking water
  • Groundwater
  • Seawater
  • Waste water
  • Surface water
  • Rainwater, etc. including sample digestion.

Modular design

The RA-7000A is a modular system that offers you maximum flexibility. Depending on your requirements, you can choose between the 3 autosamplers SANPRA™ 3, SANPRA™ 5, SANPRA™ 7, an impinger kit and an optional RH gas module:

  • SANPRA™ 3 has 80 sample positions and offers a high throughput
  • SANPRA™ 5 features the auto-digestion function (EN1483 standard-compliant fully automated permanganate digestion with 80 sample positions) to enable seamless automation of mercury analysis
  • SANPRA™ 7 is the world’s first autosampler with 29 positions for the digestion of solid samples
  • The impinger kit is designed for users with lower automation requirements. It can be combined with the RA-7000A to perform a simple and efficient mercury analysis for all samples.

Up to 3 SANPRA™ units can be controlled, which enables a throughput of up to 240 samples with minimal personnel deployment.

The RA-7000A can be used in both stand-alone and hybrid configurations, providing a functional and flexible solution for any mercury analysis requirement.

Thanks to the RH gas module, gaseous elemental mercury (GEQ) can be analyzed. GEQ can be captured with a gold sand tube and analyzed directly with the RH gas module. Big advantage: this configuration is explosion-proof!

Areas of application

Classically, measurement with the RA-7000A is a wet-chemical method, which is required by law, for example, via the Waste Water Ordinance. This is very interesting for contract laboratories and sewage treatment plants, for example, which have to comply with the DIN 12846 standard.

However, the RA-7000A can be used to measure not only waste water, but aqueous samples in general. And solids and gases can also be analyzed by means of a prior digestion via aqua regia or the addition of the RH gas module.

Specifications

  • Detection limit of up to 0.5 ppt
  • Measuring range of up to 400 ppb
  • Measuring time: 30 to 600 seconds depending on the sample
  • Autosampler with up to 80 positions
  • Semi-automatic batch process, also known as discrete direct purge (DDP)
  • Gas supply: no external gas supply required
  • Measuring method: Non-dispersive double beam cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CVAAS)
  • Sample size: 5ml (standard) / option for 20ml, 100ml and 250ml impingers
  • Carrier gas: Ambient air (self-purified by an iodized activated carbon cartridge with 1 g capacity)

Sample preparation

The RA-7000A can measure a wide range of samples including, but not limited to

  • Seawater
  • Waste water
  • Drinking water and
  • Groundwater

The samples can be digested in 4 different ways , depending on the sample type and the autosampler used:

  • Bromide-bromate solution,
  • Aqua regia,
  • Permanganate or
  • Microwave

SANPRA™3 can prepare the samples using a bromide-bromate solution. Samples that cannot be prepared using this digestion method can of course also be analyzed automatically.

SANPRA™5 uses the auto-digestion function, where the sample only needs to be placed in the selected SANPRA™ position and the correct reagents for the respective method are added. From then on, everything is automated, from reagent addition, sample boiling, stirring, LED checking of excess potassium permanganate and measurement of total mercury.

SANPRA™7 also uses the auto-digestion function and works automatically like SANPRA™5.

Measuring method

Procedure

The RA-7000A uses the reducing Discrete Direct Purge (DDP) cold vapor technique (cold vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy) in which the mercury analyzer treats each sample in a separate, independent sample tube. This technique virtually eliminates contact of the acidic sample solution with the analyte transfer pathway. The elemental mercury produced by the reduction is transferred directly to the detector via a dry and inert pathway. In this way, the mercury memory effect is minimized, resulting in improved reproducibility and precision.

A removable reagent holder, a large transparent opening flap and direct access to the sample area make the RA-7000A particularly convenient to use in daily work.

Control system

The RA7000AWin software has a user-friendly interface with a clear animated display, which means that users will be familiar with the operation in no time at all. A live animation shows the operating status of the device. Up to 3 SANPRA units can be controlled with 1 PC.

Parameters

FAQ

The RA-7000A measures elemental mercury, chemically referred to as Hg.

The measuring time varies between 30 and 600 seconds depending on the sample.

Traditionally, mercury is measured in aqueous samples, for example in drinking water, groundwater, seawater, wastewater, surface water or rainwater.

Find out more in the video.

However, mercury can also be measured in solids and gases.

The RA-7000A has a detection limit of 0.5 ppt up to 400 ppb

Yes, DIN E ISO 12846 regulates the determination of mercury.

The RA-7000A conforms to the following standards, among others:

  • US EPA 245.1,
  • US EPA 245.2,
  • US EPA 7470A,
  • APHA 3112,
  • EN 1483,
  • ISO 12846

An RA-7000A is of interest to all companies that have to comply with the waste water regulations of the legislator. These could be contract laboratories or sewage treatment plants, for example.

The RA-7000A is controlled with the RA7000AWin software, which has a user-friendly interface with a clear animated display.

DDP stands for Discrete Direct Purge and describes the process used by the RA-7000A.

This technique virtually eliminates contact between the acidic sample solution and the analyte transfer path. The elemental mercury generated by the reduction is transferred directly to the detector via a dry and inert pathway. In this way, the mercury memory effect is minimized, resulting in better reproducibility and precision.
