Application

Simple and inexpensive sample enrichment or filtration

For sample preparation for AOX analysis(AOX-400), different modules with standard-compliant operation are available depending on the method and number of samples, which can also be used for automatic sample preparation for AOF, AOCl, AOBr and AOI for subsequent determination using c-IC (AQF-5000).

AOX enrichment module30:

  • Automates sample preparation according to the column method for 30 samples
  • Available with SPE variant (Solid Phase Extraction) or variant with two channels working in parallel
  • Automated, upstream SPE can clean salt-contaminated samples
  • No supervision required during running time, can also run overnight
  • Column method
  • for water, waste water
  • with washing station for self-cleaning

5-channel AD module:

  • Parallel, semi-automatic sample preparation
  • 5 samples per hour
  • works with syringe pumps (instead of peristaltic pumps) and thus complies with the standardized enrichment rates of 3 ml per minute even with back pressure
  • Use for individual samples, small series or for parallel processing of large series
  • Freely selectable volumes for enrichment and rinsing
  • Column method
  • for water, waste water

SA-200 module:

  • Simple and robust filtration station for sample processing using the shaking method
  • filters shaking AOX samples onto ceramic carriers, which can be measured directly in the AOX-400
  • Ceramic carriers have a long service life
  • High cost savings and simplified handling thanks to ceramic filters
  • for sewage sludge

Who needs sample preparation modules?

Companies that want to carry out AOX or AOF measurements. The substances to be analyzed are usually contained in the sample in very low concentrations and cannot then be measured. Sample preparation is used to carry out a so-called concentration.

Is there a safety risk when handling samples?

Yes, there is a risk when working with wastewater, sewage sludge and soil samples, as it is never known exactly what substances and materials they contain.
However, the finished samples on the carbon columns are virtually harmless to the user. Nothing outgasses from the samples as the hazardous substances are bound in the water. Nevertheless, always wear personal protective equipment.

Standard methods

The enrichments are fully compliant with all relevant standard procedures for AOX, AOF, AOI, AOBr and AOI, among others:

  • EN ISO 9562 & LAWA P5 leaflet
  • DIN 38409
  • DIN 38414

Measuring method

Measuring method

  • Column method: enrichment of the samples on activated carbon columns
  • SPE method: enrichment, washing and elution via SPE cartridges, subsequent enrichment on activated carbon columns
  • Shaking method: filtration of the samples shaken with activated carbon via ceramic frits

Procedure of the modules

The AOX enrichment30 and the 5-channel AD module use the column method, the SA-200 module uses the shaking method.

Function Column method

The sample is aspirated and transferred to the carbon and then washed with nitrate solution.

Shaking method function

Filtration of the samples shaken with activated carbon via ceramic frits.

Parameters / elements

AOX, AOF, AOCl, AOI, AOBr

Details

AOX enrichment module30

Automatic AOX enrichment on activated carbon in accordance with legally prescribed EN ISO 9562 or DIN 38409:

  • Homogenization of samples containing solids
  • Adsorption of the sample on activated carbon
  • Washing with nitrate wash solution

The simple design with few mechanical parts and no complicated valve technology ensures high operational readiness and reliability. The strictly contamination-free sample application is of great importance for precise AOX analysis. The AOX enrichment30 prevents the sample from coming into contact with the valve or syringe. This reduces the probability of carry-over or cross-contamination. The AOX enrichment30 cleans itself after each sample (2.5 to 50 ml) by means of variable wash volumes with nitrate wash solution.

The speed of sample processing can be doubled with a second enrichment channel.

AOX enrichment30 can also be automated for samples with a high salt content. Compared to manual processing, this saves considerable time and increases the productivity of your laboratory. The AOX enrichment30-SPE performs AOX enrichment on activated carbon for water with high levels of inorganic halogens (> 1 or 5 g/l) in accordance with DIN ISO 9562 / DIN 38409-H22. This system is also available with two parallel enrichment channels.

The following steps are automated:

  • Conditioning the SPE cartridge with methanol and water
  • Adsorption of AOX samples with high salt contents on styrene-divinylbenzene resin
  • Washing the cartridge with nitrate wash solution
  • Elution with methanol and water
  • Adsorption on activated carbon columns
  • Washing with nitrate wash solution

Key data of the AOX enrichment30 module

  • DIN and EN-compliant operation
  • Analysis of water, wastewater and sewage sludge
  • Cross-contamination-free sample handling
  • Cost-effective consumables / low operating costs
  • Robust, space-saving design with few mechanical parts and no complicated valve technology
  • Strictly sequential sample processing with contamination-free sample application
  • Sample and wash volume freely selectable (25 to 2500 ml)
  • Large number of samples (up to 30 samples)
  • Memory function to safeguard the measurement in the event of a power failure
  • Enrichment volume 5 to 100 ml (preset 100 ml)

Of course, we will be happy to come to you and show you the module so that you can get to know the technology.

Once your module has been installed, our service team will be available to provide you with detailed product training. Most questions will arise as you work, so we will also be able to help you with any questions that arise at a later date – at your premises or flexibly via an online meeting.

Our modules work either with the column method or with the shaking method.

The modules are controlled via software that you can simply install on your existing PC.

AOX = EN ISO 9562 & LAWA P5 leaflet

EOX = DIN 38409, DIN 38414

We do not use peristaltic pumps, which make it very difficult to work in compliance with the standard. According to the standard, the water should be passed over the column at a rate of 3 ml per minute. Due to the particle load of the samples, more powerful pumps are required to deliver the required volume flow. Another advantage is that we have no valves in the sample path. Particles can therefore not get stuck in the valve or be carried over into the next sample. Ceramic filters instead of the polycarbonate filters often used also make handling much easier and you save costs as the ceramic filters are much more durable.
