Application

CHNS-O analysis

The EMA 502 elemental analyzer CHNS-O is the precise and reliable solution for the determination of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen in various industries such as pharmaceutical and life sciences, organic chemistry, petrochemistry and energy, environment, agronomy, food and feed.

A CHNS-O analysis can be used to assess the composition and purity of a synthetic product.

What is the advantage of this method?

The TCD detection technology guarantees highly precise and reproducible results with an RSD of 0.6 % (sulphanilic acid).

Thanks to the gas chromatographic column and the use of a thermal conductivity detector (WLD), the progress and success of the analysis can be evaluated through a real-time display of the analysis process before checking the results.

Standard methods

The EMA 502 works according to the following official reference methods:

ISO 16948; ISO 21663; ISO 10694; ISO 15178; ISO 13878; ISO 20620; ISO 2287; ISO 29541; EN 13654; EN 13654-2, EN 15936; ASTM D 5373; ASTM D 5291; ASTM D 4239; ASTM D 5622; AOAC 993.13; AOAC 2017.08, etc.

Measuring method

Functionality

The CHNS analysis begins with the combustion of the sample in the incinerator at a temperature of over 1000°C in order to convert it into its elemental compounds.

The reactor is filled with a copper powder formulation to facilitate the reduction of NOX to N2.

The gas flow then enters the oven of the gas chromatographic column, which ensures a homogeneous and adjustable temperature to ensure complete separation of all elements for detection by WLD.

For oxygen determination, the sample is subjected to pyrolysis in the oven and then passes through a chemical trap in which all impurities such as water are absorbed to enter the gas chromatographic column and finally into the TCD for detection.

EMASoft™ software

The EMASoft™ software is powerful and is used to control and manage the EMA 502. The results are calculated fully automatically by the software, which receives real-time data from the analyzer.
It has an easy-to-use interface that displays all relevant information at a glance: results, database and device status.
You can choose from a diverse library of pre-installed methods or create your own methods. Creating and managing calibration curves of all elements is quick and easy and allows you to easily recalculate any sample.

  • Start the analysis with just a few clicks
  • Change the configuration in a few simple steps and with the gif tutorial
  • The progress of the analysis can be followed in real time using the graph showing the gas peaks detected by the WLD
  • A special maintenance menu provides warnings and notifications when the reactor needs to be replaced
  • The results table shows the mean, SD and RSD of the analysis with direct selection in the graph

The EMA 502 software can be extended with the optional 21 CFR Part 11 package for laboratories in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industries that need to operate in compliance with the relevant FDA regulations.

Smart Lab solution

The EMA 502 allows you to connect to the VELP Ermes cloud platform, which reduces routine workflows by monitoring analyses in real time, anywhere and at any time.
Multiple instruments, consumables, workflows, analysis data and instrument operating conditions can be managed simultaneously from a PC, smartphone or tablet.
Instant notifications and alarms keep you informed of the status of your analysis, and remote interruption gives you total control over your processes, ensuring the highest level of safety.

Control data access by selecting who should have access. You also decide whether you want to share information directly with VELP or with authorized service centers to reduce diagnostic time and improve service support, positively impacting system uptime.
