How is the EMP-3 controlled?

The device is operated via a splash-proof color touchscreen, which allows easy selection of the various measurement modes and units. The measurement results can be displayed in µg/m³ or mg/m³, alternatively also as a bar graph with color-coded warning limits and limit value violations. Average concentrations and maximum values are also visualized. All measurement results are

are stored on an SD card and can be edited to create reports and save data. Unlike its predecessor, the EMP-2, the EMP-3 also allows the measurement data to be visualized on the display at a later date. Separate software or a control computer are not required. All function buttons are clearly arranged and enable simple, direct use in any environment.

How does the measurement work?

The EMP-3 is a compact, portable cold vapor AAS that performs continuous measurements. The measuring range extends from 0.1 µg/m³ to 2,000 µg/m³, whereby you can set the desired limit value yourself. This makes the EMP-3 an indispensable device for monitoring the maximum workplace concentration of 20 µg/m³ of air.
The measured values (GPS-supported data logger for direct allocation of location and measured value included) are saved and can be transferred to a PC for further processing.

Once switched on, the EMP-3 is ready for use in 10 minutes. It has an auto-zero function that starts automatically so that no regeneration of sensors is required. The measuring principle is based on atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), which means that the device has no saturating sensors and high loads can be detected correctly. The calibration of the AAS is stable and can be checked and renewed by our service department as part of annual maintenance. Simply send us your device by post and we will carry out the calibration. You will receive the device back within 1-2 weeks and can start measuring.

Alternatively, you can also carry out the calibration yourself, which is particularly worthwhile if you have several devices, as you will need a laboratory and must observe user protection. A calibration set for producing mercury standards is available from us.

Portable personal protection

The EMP-3 is an extremely compact and handy measuring device that weighs just 1.6 kg and measures 20.7 cm x 11.5 cm x 14 cm. It is equipped with shoulder and waist straps so that your hands remain free, which is particularly practical when working or climbing. Thanks to its low weight and the carrying system, the device is hardly noticeable and does not interfere with normal work processes.

The measuring probe can be attached to the shoulder strap in the wearer’s breathing zone to ensure continuous monitoring in the relevant area. An acoustic alarm sounds if the set warning limit is exceeded. The EMP-3 has a special technology for checking and compensating for cross-sensitivities. In the event of an alarm or a limit value being exceeded, a possible cross-sensitivity can be checked at the touch of a button.

Special applications & extensions
The EMP-3 can also be used for unattended, continuous monitoring of the mercury concentration in the ambient air. With the Hi-Lutor option, which uses the concept of dynamic flow dilution, the measuring range of the EMP-3 can be extended to up to 20,000 µg/m³. This means that mercury measurements are also possible in areas where the concentration is exceptionally high.

The Aquakit is an extension module that enables the analysis of aqueous samples.

A 0.8 meter telescopic probe is available as an option, allowing measurements to be taken in hard-to-reach places without the user having to get unnecessarily close to the potential source of danger.

FAQ

The EMP-3 is suitable for all companies where mercury can occur in the air and this is to be measured.

Mercury has a high toxicity and persistence in the environment and is therefore harmful to humans. You can read more about this in the DGUV guideline: https://www.dguv.de/medien/ifa/de/pub/grl/pdf/2016_064.pdf

The EMP-3 measures elemental mercury in the ambient air.

The MAK value indicates the maximum workplace concentration. For mercury, this is 20 µg per m³ of air.

The EMP-3 weighs 1.6 kg.

The EMP-3 has the dimensions W20.7cm, D11.5cm, H14cm

The EMP-3 uses cold vapor AAS. AAS stands for atomic absorption spectroscopy.

The measuring range of the EMP-3 is between 0.1 µg/m³ and 2,000 µg/m³.

Yes, you can set the values yourself.

As long as the mercury load in the air is below the set warning value, the device does not respond and you are protected. If the value is exceeded, an audible alarm sounds.

Yes, values measured with the EMP-3 can be transferred to a PC for further processing.

Yes, according to the manufacturer, the EMP-3 should be calibrated at least once a year. You can send us your device by post and our service will calibrate it for you. You will receive the device back within 1-2 weeks and can start the measurement. Alternatively, you can also carry out the calibration yourself, which is particularly worthwhile if you have several devices. You need a laboratory and must observe user protection. A calibration set for the production of mercury standards is available from us.

Of course, we will be happy to come to you and show you the appliance so that you can get to know the technology.

After delivery of your EMP-3, our service team will be available to provide you with detailed product training. Most questions will arise during operation, so we will also be able to help you with any questions that arise at a later date – at your premises or flexibly via an online meeting.

No, you can start measuring 10 minutes after switching on.

As mercury is measured in the ambient air, you do not need to prepare any samples.

The EMP-3 uses cold vapor AAS, whereby the mercury in the air can be measured directly. Saturation effects on the sensor do not occur. The EMP-3 is light and easy to handle and requires little maintenance. The operation is clearly laid out so that you can set different views on the display and have a good understanding of the device. Our devices have a very long service life and we guarantee the best service, even for old products (incl. availability of spare parts)
