PFAS

What is PFAS?

PFAS – perfluorinated or polyfluorinated alkyl substances, are aliphatic compounds in which fluorine is bound to carbon atoms. This is a group of more than 10,000 artificial compounds. Important starting compounds are perfluorooctanoic acid derivatives (PFOS).
PFAS are used in industry as well as in many everyday products, for example in water-repellent clothing, waterproofing sprays, cosmetics, coated pans and pots or fire extinguishing foams. They also play a major role in food packaging made of paper or plastic. However, the compounds are difficult or impossible to break down and accumulate in the environment (soil, water) and the food chain (living organisms). They have toxic and carcinogenic properties.

Which device is used for the measurement?

Our AQF-5000 analyzer is used for combustion digestion, which is combined with ion chromatography. This combination is called Combustion-IC. For sample preparation, we recommend our proven AOX enrichment30(AOX sample preparation) for the column method. We provide you with everything from a single source.

How can PFAS be measured?

PFAS can be determined as an individual compound analysis, but this is very difficult with over 10,000 target compounds. For this reason, PFAS is determined as a sum parameter in environmental and product analysis based on AOX(read more about our AOX-400 here) as absorbable organic fluorides AOF or based on EOX as extractable organic fluorides EOF using combustion IC.

Combustion IC is a combination of hydropyrolytic combustion with the AQF-5000 and ion chromatic fluorine determination with an ion chromatograph from Thermo Fisher Scientific. In AOF analysis, the PFAS contained in a water sample are enriched on activated carbon. This is burned in the combustion IC and the combustion gases are collected in an absorption solution. An aliquot from the absorption solution is then automatically injected into the IC and analyzed. The procedure is standardized in DIN 38409-59.
