PE-1000

Fully automatic petro-pyrolysis mercury analyser

The PE-1000 is a fully automatic petro-pyrolysis mercury analyser for measuring mercury from liquid petroleum-based matrices such as crude oil, condensate, naphtha and other refined liquid fractions.

Direct and rapid determination of mercury in petroleum-based samples

The PE-1000 is a fully automated petro-pyrolysis mercury analyser. It is designed to measure mercury in liquid petroleum-based matrices such as crude oil, condensate, naphtha and other refined liquid fractions. The instrument is UOP-938 compliant and can be upgraded to analyse gases, LPG and LNG. The combination of automatic sample introduction by autosampler into the vertical combustion system, intermediate focusing on gold traps and detection by atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (AFS) allow reliable detection down to 0.01 ppb in routine applications. Samples are protected from contamination and loss of mercury in standard 2 ml septum-sealed vials. Gases and LPGs can also be measured. The PE-1000 is the perfect system for analysing mercury in naphtha, LPGs, LNGs, paraffin, light and heavy oil, crude oil, condensate and paraffin.

Compliant with UOP-938-20

The PE-1000 is accredited and recognised according to UOP-938-20. Method compliance ensures that the analysis is performed in accordance with the validated procedure, where traceability of all results is provided for each audit.

Ultra-high sensitivity – detection limit as low as 0.003 ng

The PE-1000’s cold vapour AFS is highly sensitive and stable. It is able to achieve a detection limit as low as 0.003 ng Hg and a standard deviation of less than 3% at 0.1 ng Hg.

Patented innovative combustion technology with enrichment

The PE-1000 features highly efficient combustion with precise temperature control to ensure complete conversion of petroleum samples. With its patented innovative combustion technology (Patent No.: JP 4226049 & USP 8223332), the PE-1000 is capable of analysing samples ranging from crude oil or condensate to refined liquid products such as naphtha, jet-fuel, etc. Thanks to the highly efficient conversion (Quick Ramp Fast Cool), any soot formation is avoided.

Unsurpassed accuracy and precision

The entire sample measurement process is fully automated without operator intervention. Errors that occur during sample handling by humans can be neglected. Liquid petroleum samples are mostly volatile and their volatility leads to loss of analytes. For measurement with the PE-1000, all samples are placed in tightly sealed 2 ml septum vials. This ensures data integrity. Sample homogeneity is also critical in trace analysis. The PE-1000 is equipped with a vortex shaker in the autosampler to allow good mixing of the sample before an aliquot is taken for injection. This ensures sample homogeneity and representative sampling for each aliquot taken for analysis. Automation eliminates handling errors.

Flexible autosampler configuration depending on sample volume

The PE series has been designed with flexibility in mind for all customers and laboratory requirements. It can be operated as a stand-alone system where an operator manually injects the sample directly via a gas-tight syringe. Alternatively, the PE-1000 can be equipped with different autosamplers (15 or 121 positions). The PE series can be operated with a 15-position autosampler that automates the injection of standards and samples without operator intervention. This variant can significantly increase sample throughput in a fast-working laboratory with a medium sample volume. With the growing demand and need for mercury analysis in both commodities and refined products, NIC also offers an autosampler for all high performance laboratories with demanding sample turnaround times. This autosampler has space for up to 121 samples.

A wide range of accessories for different types of applications

Not only refineries or petrochemical plants have to perform measurements in liquid raw materials to protect their equipment from corrosion (Liquid Metal Embrittlement), but also gas processing plants have to compulsorily test their gas supply and products for mercury. Aluminium heat exchangers used in liquefaction are highly exposed to mercury corrosion (LME effect). Most petroleum testing laboratories also have to test both liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon matrices. The PE-1000 can therefore be optionally equipped for the analysis of gases, LPG and LNG. Samplers for direct sampling of high pressure systems (pipeline, pressure cylinders) are available. Samples are collected on amalgamation tubes and transferred to the PE-1000 by means of a heating unit (RH-PE).
